Our Charity Partners West End FC are kindly donating 2 gazebos, this means we should now have a total of 5 gazebos. Therefore we will be able to cover the queue, the table areas and the table serving areas. The reason we space out the serving areas is to ensure a 2 metre distancing at all times. This is between volunteers and other volunteers, but also between volunteers and those attending.
Scott Macdougall head coach of West End FC, gave up his time on the 1st January to help with our awareness/emergency frontline outreach. Expecting it to be quiet, with the extended hours we actually saw around 100 people. Considering there was no public transport into town, we were delighted to be able to help so many people.
Scott says, "I feel if we all play our part, we can make real change. We are proud as a team to support Street Friends and it's activities, helping those in need. Many of us do not talk about things enough, the fact we see people attending here not just for emergency care packages and meals, but also for kind words & chats is heart-warming. This is what community is all about. Our players work together, to become a better team, so it goes without saying that if a community comes together, then real change can happen."
The team have continually supported us as well as the incredible Men Matter Scotland. You may ask why we keep mentioning Men Matter Scotland, it is due to their incredible proactive approach, as well as activity based help on top of regular mental health group facilities. However it is also due to statistics. Statistically men are far less likely to talk about mental health or any other issues, which leads to several things. Suicide rates are far higher amongst males of any age. Homelessness is higher amongst males. At street friends we have a higher percentage of males attending. Drug related deaths are higher amongst males, as well as overdoses.
We support all genders/ gender identity with Street Friends, completely non-judgemental at all times. However we like to be able to actively support those we see who are struggling the most. Hence looking at statistics. We will ALWAYS be there for anyone in need.
